This month, PSP will begin it’s olive harvest in the Betlehem and Hebron regions. We will focus on the village of Al-Jab’a who will attempt to plow land close to the settlement of Beit ‘Ain, the residents of which have terrorized the people of Al-Jab’a for years (please see previous reports from Jab’a). This land has not been plowed for over 7 years and belongs to five families. The last time the farmers attempted to plow this land, the settlers attacked them and set fire to their tractors. Therefore, PSP is COLLECTING MONEY to rent two tractors to work this land. International and Israeli activists will join with the PSP committee and the people of Jab’a to go to this land in an act of solidarity with the farmers as they reclaim what is theirs.

More details to follow soon!

Friday, Nov. 3–PSP activists joined with Israeli peace group Ta’ayush to challenge the theft of olives and olive trees by Israeli settlers and the Israeli occupation forces. Activists planned to march to the Al-Khadr checkpoint where they would dump Palestinian olives, olive tree branches and olive oil onto Route 60, a street the Israeli government intends to make Israeli-only for settlers. Like the grape harvest demonstration less than one month ago, activists were immediately met with brutality from the Israeli army and Israeli police.

Settlers left their cars in the streets to confront the activists. During the confrontation, one settler punched a member of Ta’ayush in the face. The soldiers and police approached quickly, and without saying anything began attacking and arresting the activists. Some grabbed activists, while others beat them with guns and clubs. Demonstrators were thrown to the ground then kicked and punched and beaten again with guns and clubs. As people were being arrested, activists clung to them in efforts to de-arrest, but because there were approximately 100 soldiers and police present, they were unsuccessful. 2 members of Ta’ayush and 3 Palestinian activists were arrested and are still being held. They are all being held in Kiryat Arba, a nearby settlement, but the Palestinians have been isolated in a separate location. 2 Palestinians were taken to the hospital. Samer Abdel Kareem 32, was beaten severely, lost consciousness at the scene and does not remember the attack. He was treated for a concussion and then released. Mahmoud Mohammed Saleh 28 remains in the hospital with injuries to the lower back and spine. At this time he is unable to walk on his own.

PSP will bring you updates as they come to us.

The reports from Gaza come to us late. Along with the water, the Israeli army cuts the electric whenever they please. When tanks invade the city, they bomb the streets, turning a once paved road into rubble and leaving it completely unusable. The people are not free to relax in an Internet cafe write reports, search websites or send emails to friends.

Such was the case in Khan Younis Refugee Camp. On 26/10/2006, the last day of the Eid celebration, the power was cut at 6am and the people heard the tanks and F16s approaching. The people know now that this is the signal to flee their homes to avoid the bombs and rockets. The tanks came this time and bombed 4 houses until they were just piles of stone and broken possessions.

The soldiers shot 3 people dead in the street and shot many more in the arms and legs. Adnan Hussein Brais 27, and Ali Atabash 24, were killed when an F16 fired a rocket into their car. Shrapnel flew from the blast injuring even more people. 3 people remain in critical condition at Nasser Hospital with shrapnel wounds to the stomach and head.

Today, Nov. 1, PSP went to the village of Surif to visit their olive oil production factory. We intended to write a report about the olive oil process from the tree to the bottle. Instead, we found ourselves writing a report on the devestating impact of settlements on the economic survival of Palestinian farmers and business owners.

Factory owner, Mohammed Barathea, says that business in Surif used to be very busy, but now with the constant presence of soldiers and the completion of the Apartheid Wall which resulted in the annexation of more land after land had already been confisgated for settlement expansion, business is slow. Many Palestinian farmers have been cut off from their agricultural land by the Apartheid Wall throughout the West Bank. In Surif, those Palestinian farmers who do still have access to their land are not immune to the hardships of occupation. Many have had their olive trees cut or set on fire by Israeli settlers. Settlers have also brought their sheep to eat these crops, making harvests negligible. Palestinians are frequently met by military hummers and jeeps as they go to work these fields and are forced to return home, leaving their crops unattended. Soldiers have told them they cannot return to the fields without permission from the District Coordinating Office (DCO). However, the DCO will not grant them permission to harvest on their own land.

The DCO coordinates between the Israeli army and Palestinian farmers. Palestinians must apply for permission to work their land, and the DCO will either deny them or assign a few days of “legal” harvesting. The DCO overlooks the fact that olive trees need year-round care. The land needs to be tilled, and the branches need to be pruned, so that when harvest season comes the trees are fruitful. Without continuing care, the families will have little benefit from the harvest. The DCO does not grant permission for off-season care. They grant only a few days of their choosing, and even with this permission the army may still deny them the access to their lands and if they do access their land, they still face violence from settlers.

In Surif, the Wall has stolen 90 dunums of land. The families of Khalil Mohammed Baradaya, Sleman Abed Al-Hadi Baradaya, Ibraheim Abed Arackman Al-Hiya and Abed Al-Khadr Al-hiya are now without land and without work. A short time ago, these families went around the Wall to their land only to find that it had been destroyed by settlers and sheep. When they returned to repair the damage they were met by soldiers who told them to go home immediately, that ‘this is Israeli land now’.<!-- D(["mb","

October 23, 2006, members of the Palestine Solidarity Project joined with Israeli peace groups Ta’ayush and Anarchists Againt The Wall to challenge the validity of the illegally created road blocks that have been forced upon many Palestinian villages, severly limiting their freedom of movement and access to essentials such as schools, hospitals, and economic centers.

They began their work in the village of Al-Jab’a where they have tried several times to remove a roadblock blocking the path from Surif to Al-Jab’a (please see previous report for more information on this situation). As they waited for more demonstrators to join them, an Israeli military hummer pulled up and was parked in front of the roadblock. Fearing an early confrontation here might influence the success of their other planned actions, the activists proceeded to move onto the village of Zif.

Once in Zif, Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists immediately moved to attach ropes to the large cement blocks. Upon realizing the demonstrators’ intentions, nearby Palestinians quickly joined them and took their spots on the rope. They pulled and pushed together until finally they were able to remove 2 blocks. The army did not see the activists nor did they come to interfere in the action. The activists returned to the cars and moved on to the village of Beit Ommar, leaving the Palestinians of Zif with a semi-open road and with more ease in transportation.

When the activists arrived in Beit Ommar they again began to attach the ropes to the blocks. This would be PSP’s second attempt at opening this road (please see previous report). Palestinians from Beit Ommar, along with the traveling International and Israeli activists quickly removed 2 more concrete blocks from the road. As They were finishing with the second stone, the army arrived. During the first attempt to open this roadblock, the army violently attacked demonstrators, causing several severe injuries. Because of this, the activists decided to disperse, as the road had already been successfully opened.

As of 2 days after the actions, both roads remain open.

Today, October 21, soldiers and settlers from Susiya settlement came with army- issued bulldozers and proceeded to destroy 150 Dunums (1 Dunum=1/4 acre) of olive groves belonging to the Palestinians. The groves belong to the families of Ashmasti, Abu Sopea and Asha Bin who live in Susiya bedouin camp. The families had planned to harvest these olives at the end of Ramadan, when they would be finished fasting and have more energy to work. Because of the economic crisis throughout Palestine, and the particularly difficult situation for small farming communities in this area which is the beginning of the Negev desert, the demolition of this land will have unbelievably devastating consequences for the people of Susiya, and their ability to survive through the winter, when they will have little or no income.

Susiya settlement is not more than 40 Dunums away from the camp. It started as a trailer camp over 10 years ago and, like many settlements, they were not at first supported by Israel. A group of Israelis decided they would go there and make new houses on this land, and eventually, when they brought enough people, the army would have no choice but to support and protect them. Today, Susiya settlement consists of many permanent houses which are protected by a constant military presence. Often times, when settlers go to attack the Palestinians, they do so with the accompaniment of one of these soldiers. They are currently constructing tents outside of this settlement to watch the Palestinian families and to annex more land for this illegal settlement.

In the past, these settlers have destroyed many crops belonging to the people of Susiya. A little over 1 year ago, settlers and soldiers came to demolish an olive grove, only to plant new olive trees on this same land they had just stolen. Recently, a group of settlers from the camp made bread from poisonous water and fed it to a flock of sheep belonging to the Palestinians. They have stolen trees, fruits, vegetables and animals. They attack these families on a regular basis. The families have tried calling lawyers, police, and the Israeli army, but no action has ever been taken on their behalf. When Abu Khalil was stabbed one month ago, no one was charged with the incident. This story continues.

The olives that were destroyed today were ripe, plump and ready to be picked. Now, the crops these families were depending on are gone, and with it, any possibility of future harvests as this land is now stolen by the settlers, who will, with the support of the Israeli army, claim it as their own and prevent Palestinians from going on it. We believe they will use this as some type of farming land for themselves, as is customary when settlements use this strategy to annex more land. Once they have occupied the land, the Israeli government rarely orders them to return it, and it usually is seen as an extension of the settlement.

PSP will continue to follow this situation.

Rafah city, Gaza

Not one day passes in Rafah city without destruction and violence from the Israeli army. Homes are continued to be destroyed. Rockets are being fired into the city daily. Entire families have been killed. Yesterday alone, 8 people were killed in Gaza. 24 people were killed last week alone in Gaza, including a woman and children. The people here are suffering. 80% of households live in poverty. The uncertainty of what will come in the next moments, the lack of jobs and education, the loss of hope and obtainable dreams overwhelm the people. The army comes into Rafah daily. There is no escape from the brutality. The people of Gaza cry out for help, but no one comes and the violence never stops. Instead, the world accepts Israel’s justifications that they are looking for the arrested soldier, Corporal Shalit, and they remain silent as Israel destroys the entire infrastructure leaving the majority of civilians without food, water and electricity. The crossing where food is brought into Gaza have been closed since June. The number of homeless families continues to grow, and even more people are forced to live in tents, enduring everyday these difficult conditions.

The city of Rafah covers about 23 miles (60,500 dunums). With the continuing destruction of what little land there is, these families will never hope to build a house of their own. Those with houses are left wondering whether the war planes that are constantly flying above them will bomb their house next.

The children of Rafah endure the hardships of this occupation each day as they struggle just to make it to the school. They must pass tanks, soldiers, checkpoints and sniper towers, always aware that some of their classmates and friends have been killed while doing such.

This story is not finished. Israel will continue their assault on the people of Palestine as long as the international community allows them to do such. The people of Rafah and all of Palestine will continue to suffer until the world finally breaks their silence and says the savage and unrelenting occupation of Palestine is illegal, inhumane and must end now.

On Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4am two unmarked cars with Israeli Special Forces inside drove into the village of Beit Ommar and shot a man in the street as he was walking to the mosque for morning prayers. The special forces were dressed as Palestinians. Jamil Aljem, 40, was shot twice in the stomach. He is currently in critical condition in a hospital in Hebron. Arab media reports that the IOF has not made a statement as to the reason for this attempted execution.

Israel has publicly admitted to engaging in a policy of extra-judicial killings since the beginning of the Second Intifada (though practically Israel has engaged in such activities for decades) . The UN has consistently condemned these actions, stating they are in violation of international law including the 4th Geneva Convention’s Protection of Civilian Persons in Times of War, which Israel signed in 1951. Article 3(1)(d) of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits “the passing of sentences and the carrying out of executions without previous judgment pronounced by a regularly constituted court, affording all the judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples.”
Jamil is a father of 5. PSP is in contact with his family.
